ACT2˛ operates best in a networked environment. Most of our clients utilize local area networks and Hence's client base is split between Novell and Microsoft. We support either platform, so it is pretty much up to each user to decide which will work best for them. In Ventura, we use Microsoft Advanced Server 2000 and Microsoft NT (ver. 4). We have a Novell server, but to be honest find it very cumbersome to use and only keep it around in case we are pressed into testing a particular feature. It is a Netware 5 server and we (personally) yearn for those days of Netware 3 and the more simple approach to network computing.
Hence has no specific requirements, virtually any hardware configuration that will fulfill your computing needs.
We caution you to insure that you configure your server with sufficient hard disk space to hold your jobs. Because ACT2˛ provides order retention with the objective of reorders, client sites disk requirements can become rather large. You are given a choice of the length of time that jobs are to remain on the server. Several of our existing clients retain orders for as long as 5 years. So if you are processing 350 orders a day and expect to retain them for 5 years, then your database can become quite large. A recommended entry server system for a "start-up" ACT2˛ pre-press pruduction site, could be:
But basically, just a nice stable File Server. Dell, Gateway, IBM, and many other manufacturers, will have a nice web site available that will help you to configure a reasonable server. workstation(s)* There are a great variety of workstations being used by our existing clients. At Hence we use Dell workstations, but we know that we have clients using every imaginable manufacture's PC product, a few of them are even using systems built for them by a local (to them) CNE (Network Engineer). If someone were to ask Hence to provide a "specific configuration" it would be the following:
